I’ve had the privilege of serving as an official in both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAP) and as president of the New England Equine Association (NEEA). Here are some of the most pressing and important issues facing today’s equine community:
The AP and NEEA are working together to advance our members’ interests by sharing best practices in equine care and training. Both organizations have a strong history of education and awareness of the issues involved with equine care and training. The latest developments from both organizations are part of a larger movement toward addressing issues of horse nutrition. We must continue to advance those efforts to address the problem of obesity and diabetes and promote a healthy lifestyle for our nation’s stallions. One of the challenges in educating the public about the topic is that people who come to see horses are often unprepared for our highly-trained animals. It is even more difficult for people who have never experienced a horse in the wild to understand the nuances of nutrition and training and how to manage a stallion safely. This paper by Dr. David S. Hulme, M.D., and Dr. Eric Ziegler shows how a single session of hands-on experience with a horse can teach many people about the role of nutrition, metabolism and energy metabolism in equine health and welfare. Dr. Hulme has a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from Purdue University, and Dr. Ziegler received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Colorado in Boulder. The current issue of JAMA Internal Medicine can be found here and the latest issue of JAMA Veterinary Internal Medicine can be found here.
How would you use a stallion? For more information on how stallion performance can impact your equine experience and training see our stallion article here. We are also looking forward to working with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the American College of Sports Medicine to provide our stallions with the most comprehensive testing protocols. We will share these protocols with you when we have them.
What are your best practices? We at the AP and NEEA have helped thousands of people take advantage of our stallions. If you know anyone who wants to learn more about how to successfully coach their horse, this is the article or website to contact for help. There is a great video on how to do a basic conditioning assessment here. There is a video on how to use a stallion as a
