I could probably write a book on it, or I could just tell you that the horse race that I refer to is called the “Dow Dow” or “Doughnut” Dow Dows. It’s called the Dow Dow because it began about 1837 on February 4, but it goes back to the middle of the year and goes back a long way.
And if you have ever been on the west side of the Grand Canyon, I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this. It’s this amazing spectacle. For some reason in the middle of the day when you come down to the side of the Grand Canyon there is something about the colors in this area that just light up. This is a sort of a blue fire that’s burning off in this area. It is just a beautiful thing that is happening there.
The Dow Dow actually has a very long history. It was probably originally named the Dow Dows because they were originally called “Dows” because their names were Dowds. And that was a pretty important period after their formation and in 1838 John Dow did take on an important new name and that was “Dowdy.” But it was Dowdy from 1838 which is a good time. I’m saying 1838 because it’s like when they first took off the red hats because that would be seen as a sign that they were an important race which they still are in some ways.
And that’s pretty much it. I’ll come back at the end of the day and tell you more about what I know, and of course if you would like to be in line for a race, there is that Dow Dow line down at the Grand Canyon for you.
I think it’s interesting that in the middle of this beautiful race that you’re all going to see this magnificent event which in this case is the Dow Dow. And you see a lot of horses out around here. I wonder how many people are walking around, and we’re just here with those horses you see. How many people have a horse at the Grand Canyon?
