While the technology has been available since 2004, it took several more tries to commercialize it. “The cost of NAP was too high. When we tried to sell it, nobody wanted to buy,” said Dr. David A. Wichman, a professor at North Central College who is leading the research effort. “The first time we tried to sell it, we had some people who would buy it, but the demand was not there. So we tried to introduce it, we tried it, then we had to change the name.” The new name for the device is a form of electric storage called NEMA 2. As far as the public knows, it is now a small step in the development of the future of electric mobility. In addition to being able to charge an electric motor when not in use, NAP can also store the energy it uses in the form of a chemical reaction. The reaction involves converting hydrogen gas into electricity. The battery used to charge NAP is made of magnesium metal. “By using very thin electrodes, it can produce electricity in a much shorter time,” Dr. Wichman said. “This is an important breakthrough in chemistry that will be important for electric vehicles on the road.”
