A racing nap is just that — a relaxing and relaxing time in a race car.
There are a number of naps associated with the NASCAR season, but the most common involves racing at Daytona Beach on the first day of the season. It is the time when we get a chance to just relax, take a little nap and take it for granted.
What is that like to sleep in a race car?
It’s like a little sleepover at my hotel. I can’t sleep, but I can’t get up. I want to get out there and get my feet wet. It’s a little bit more comfortable sitting in there.
Do you get any sleep deprivation from going through the weeks to the race?
I’m fine. I haven’t had one sleep deprivation, and I haven’t had any where I’m driving through a race at 10,000 feet. But I know that there is the possibility. At other tracks where I might not know the track that night, I will have to sit down. If you’re in your car at 10,000 feet and you get into second gear for the next 300 laps or whatever, then you’ll get into trouble.
Have you been able to sleep through the night this season?
Yeah, I really haven’t, but it was different because it was the first time we did this season. I had been back in the pits for three days and was getting tired of the tires that we had, so I took a nap. I had been to sleep. I was really, really tired. I woke up and turned on the TV right away and the race was on again. It was just like, Hey, I can do this.
Did you go to sleep that night?
It’s funny. I said to myself, OK, I’m taking a nap. I just pulled out of the car and I could hear everybody coming up behind me and I just took a nap. When I woke up the next morning and started to worry about it, it was not the first time they had told me to go take a nap over some little trouble, I should just relax a little. But I got to sleep.
I know you were up and running by 8:30 that morning, correct?
It’s 8:30, and I still hadn’t gotten back to the hotel by 10 that morning — which was another reason why we were so tired that night. Just because no one on our side
