‘We should be a family.’

For the next week, the four horses are treated like humans. They are fed, bathed, dressed and allowed to sleep on the floor.


“The horses are treated like adults,” said the Rev. Joe Martin with the South Side Youth Church. “This isn’t just about an animal. We should be a family, and there should be no question of who’s in and who’s out.”

Martin took the reins of the race.

“Some people think that there should be an exception here. There’s got to be an exception,” he said. “We have to treat them with respect and respect their race. We also have to recognize other races in Chicago and other places that are a little bit more progressive than ours.”

As the Democratic nominee, I am extremely proud to receive a national award from the National Organization for Marriage. Last year, for my work to protect same-sex couples from discrimination in the legal profession, I was honored with the Courage Award.

That honor and award from my fellow citizens has given me a great sense of optimism about the future of our marriage movement.

And because the LGBT community has been so strong in helping build the movement for equality in this country, it has been clear to me, and I believe all LGBT activists, that there’s never been anything quite like the civil rights movement.

And if there was anything else, it would be this: LGBT people are the force that can make real change happen.

For too long, our voices were always shut out of the dialogue. Too many times, we were told by the right wing, and even by many people within our own communities, that our efforts were “politicizing” our families, relationships and issues.

The truth is that our rights to live free from discrimination, to marry who we want, and to raise our families – these are rights that many of us take for granted. They’re very natural rights.

But this is also why the civil rights movement is so vital.
