How do the pros handle pressure?
“The pressure is all part of it. The most important thing is keeping your head down because you’re not going to go anywhere. It’s about keeping you focused, because at the end of the day, that really matters. You can’t change that day-to-day but you can change a part of it so if a part of your mind says, ‘How am I going to win this game? I’m not going to give up,’ that’s all about what you believe in and what you want to see.
“At what level do you practice? How do you train? How much do you train? And who does that for you? That is the most important thing, to keep your focus because if you forget about how you do things, how you train, just how you think a little bit about things, you just can’t win.”
Where I live, there was a horse for sale that won all its races in Kentucky on Friday, but never broke half a point through the final four miles. It was called the “Lucky,” and it wasn’t supposed to win, but the trainers who were betting the most on it had a better chance to do it than anybody else. What was the secret?
“No one would ever tell you how to beat your opponent,” said Jim Davis, the chief sponsor of the horse. “If you’re the only person betting a small percentage on him, I bet you can beat a horse by six months. You can beat a horse by one year. If I know a trainer that works for one of the big horse-racing teams, I tell him to look into the way some of those big teams ride their horses. Some people are good horse trainers and it means nothing if they can’t work with horses to get the best out of them, because those horses can break the world.”
That’s an interesting take, but don’t you think the horse was going to beat the other horse to win?
“No, it’s a stupid bet, but they know it’s wrong,” said Davis. “When people are betting such a small percentage on another horse, the odds do go up.”
