I think music is a part of mental health, as opposed to the general mental-health field.
How did you feel when you discovered music?

I was always kind of on the edge of music. I’ve played guitar before, but always on the side of having to suppress these feelings about not having the right stuff and then having to play music every day when I’m working.
How did the music affect your confidence?
I just found like the guitar made me feel less shy about who I’m playing with. Like, I can play something I like better and be OK about people’s reactions. I think that’s more useful.
How did the music affect your relationship with your parents?
It was really hard when I discovered I’m a musician. I mean… this is kind of weird, but my mom never knew I was like a music guy, it just kind of happened. [laughs]
How is there such a difference in music culture when you’re a kid vs. what you’d expect from teenagers and how does it make for a different experience than what you’d expect?
Like, when I was like 15, I came out. I used to do like, music documentaries on YouTube every night. But now music comes so easily to me. And I’m like, this is it? Now I have to make it my own experience. I don’t care about doing something new, I just care about being something new.
Why do you think there isn’t more discussion around the potential mental health benefits of music?
It’s easier to get a certain perception of what music is. Just the general “I like it” isn’t really good enough. I think there’s a huge stigma that’s associated with being gay, as well. But what’s really great, especially given current events, is that if someone who wants to express themselves and say something is coming out and is able to find somebody who understands, that’s great. The internet is a huge thing right now. We live in this era of mass communication – more than ever, as more people experience things outside of their traditional, traditional boundaries.
You mentioned you have a friend who’s gay. What does that mean to you?
I think that just, for me, being gay didn’t affect me in the way I thought it would, like, I was pretty calm about it. The gay community I’ve been in, I feel like it didn’t bother me
