The goal for this exercise is to learn the following chord patterns for a single string (F – C – G – Am – Bb):
The “key” is F
The only possible changes you can perform are Dm – Fm – D# – Am – F, but you can add any other chord to create more complex chord changes. The only change you’ll need to work at one time is the b9 chord.
I know I could easily play all those changes on the guitar, but it’s easier to learn the chord patterns by ear. Here are the steps in a musical notation system for that:
I know these are all difficult to play, but you should be able to play them quite well within a week if you practice them several times a day.

Doing a short practice run through all the chord patterns will teach you them to the point where they don’t require much practice:
You’ll notice that there are no chords in there that don’t change the chord you’re playing. The first pattern to build is F major and, because you’re just playing it like that, that will do nicely. After that, it’s Dm and then you need to make the changes.
The chord progression for that exercise is B – F# – D – Dm – Fm – Bb. But instead of playing the pattern twice, start from the bottom and build the pattern from there in the next 5 bars. Remember to switch chords when you get to the final pattern of that progression.

There are a few other chord progressions that are similar, but I think this is my favorite. You could even use any other chord progression of the same type you have in your brain, but for the purposes of this exercise, I’ve chosen the ones that I think will help you when your fingers get sore and your fingers get confused and your fingers get tired.
