Or is it too young or too old to learn what guitar is?
This is a question that pops up a lot lately. I’ve heard plenty of people say either age of guitar is wrong (it can’t hold the notes it needs to), or that there’s a “soft spot” in one’s head that can give a child what it needs to develop. I think that, on the rare occasion that someone needs help learning how to play a guitar, they should have the teacher teach them the guitar, and not some teacher sitting there explaining every note to them.
There’s only one right answer to this question. When I was in ninth grade, I had an old man who taught me how to play guitar. I found his lessons extremely helpful, and it took me a long time to move on. I’d try to play what he told me, and I’d get frustrated. What he told me was wrong. And yet I couldn’t see why.
Maybe I’m doing something wrong, like not practicing enough with the right equipment, or playing at the wrong time of day. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, like not playing on a warmup.
When I asked my parents why I couldn’t play at the right time of day, they told me it was because I was “too young.”
They knew I was young. But they didn’t expect me to learn how to play at that age in a very long time. Why? Because I’m a kid. So if I was going to learn how to play, I figured I could learn it from them.
I’m so used to my parents and friends making assumptions about my playing abilities that there really aren’t any “hard facts” that need to be kept. The way I feel about that depends on the day. For example, sometimes I wonder if I could really play a song by a popular band like, say, the Rolling Stones. Can you really play a song like that with that much practice? Or if I was able to, would I have had as much success in my life as I have? There might be other times when my parents let me out of the house after school and say, “If you come outside, play.” So I just kind of let that pass by without having a good answer.
As a musician, it’s easy to feel like the guitar teacher makes assumptions about you, too. Can you play at the speed and in the same way that the teacher thinks you can play?
