“The piano is probably the hardest instrument. The fingering is a bit hard, the fingering is a bit hard and you’re playing in all the times, the time changes, the tone is not very clear, you have to learn a lot of things,” Rütgen told FADER.
Rütgen also revealed that he has no plans to take the piano to gigs or performances, instead preferring to create his own songs.
“For example, one of the songs we’re working on right now has no words and has a lot of rhythm,” he said. “It’s a bit like the song ‘Tutti avanti in c’è. In the way, it’s a ‘dancing in the dirt’ song which has many elements, some of them are my own and it’s a song for women. So it’s all mine. But if you want it, then I will work on it. But I already am working on another song with a couple of female elements, I will work on it. It’s very hard to play the melody, but I want to work on the melody and I also want to give a different feeling to the composition, and sometimes it could sound really hard with the piano.”
Rütgen also said that the most difficult part of learning to play the piano is in the beginning.
“For some people the beginning, is when I first get started. The piano is very, very easy, but you learn every day that you have all the notes, and you’re going to learn it from there. But then you have to learn how to play it,” he revealed. “Maybe I can be even more difficult, but I might need to play a solo and make it very clear what I’m doing.
“For example, I used to say from the very beginning: ‘I don’t know how to play the piano.’ That was the start of my learning. And if you said that at a very, very early point and it’s difficult, then I know how to play the piano. That means you might be able to play something, but it will be easier than a beginner and you should be really able to play it,” he added.
