What’s the hardest song to play on guitar?
It depends because that’s why we all play what we do. If you were a teacher, you might say you don’t like kids to learn how to play guitar. I would say the easiest is probably not something that should really be considered a beginner’s song. But the harder you are to play, obviously, the better. That’s why we all play what we do. That would be easier than to say, “How do you get through your first day of practice?” It’s all relative. I don’t ever really think about getting an A in any of that because I know at that point, if you’re playing it well, you’re probably got a good foundation in your mind and in body and you can go do it, and I know that from experience. I hope that that applies to you, because I do think you should just go for it and do what your heart tells you to do.
Is it hard to play blues now? Have you played “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Explosion”?
It’s not the same as it used to be. A band as big as our is probably much more influenced by the new blues and stuff like that. We’ve seen things in that music that are really good because the new music is more powerful, and not just because you’re playing a lot faster. But you gotta realize how hard those songs are, especially because, like all these people have said, we’re all on this journey that’s a long way from where we were in the old days. And you’re not going to stop now, and you can’t go back to where you were in the old days. You just have to do what you got to do to make it in this world, to make it as good as you know you can be.
Are there any people in music that are your favorites right now?
I love the work that Tom Waits did. And I love the work that Kenny G did. And the work that John Lennon did. And of course, we have Peter Gabriel. But just those four, all those guys, and we’re doing a lot of it. It’s really nice. It’s great to hear some of the old guys singing or working or just playing along. Those were all great musicians to listen to. They all taught you a lot of stuff and it’s a hard thing to get started in music. But that’s why we started so many bands like that
