The European Commission says it will not interfere further in the Brexit negotiations, but it is continuing its attempts to broker a post-Brexit trade deal with the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom on Wednesday said it cannot be “bamboozled” by Brussels and urged EU and member-state officials to come together to strike a new trade pact. It comes as the U.K. prepares to hold a referendum over whether it should sever its financial ties with the 28-nation bloc.
Commission spokeswoman Nathalie Kokonis confirmed, and said Brussels remained prepared to do what it could to broker a settlement, but would not intervene. Asked whether the Commission could impose a border tax on Britain, she said: “Not really.”
Earlier, she referred reporters to an “expeditious” process in which the United Kingdom’s “representatives” were making “a very intensive effort to try and work out a comprehensive, long-term relationship.”
She confirmed that the European Union’s negotiating team had received information from U.K. government ministries of the potential implications of a customs border tax and it has “responded” to British concerns on the subject, she said.
She also made clear that as it is only proposing the first part of negotiations, the Commission is “prepared to work within the framework of the Article 50 agreement as well” to strike a deal.
