A huge proportion of photographers use Darktable. This has resulted in significant cost savings for both users and businesses. In my view it’s one of the world’s most impressive photographic workflows. There’s no doubt that even though there are new tools and new models to think about, darktable remains the best tool for any photographer.
Why is DNG slower than Lightroom?
Theoretically the two tools should be very similar as the base software is similar too. This however is not the case. Lightroom is in most cases faster which is probably why people are willing to pay for it. In my view, the fact that DNG is faster, is to a great extent a myth. Here’s why and a few reasons why the two software have to be used separately.
There’s no ‘realtime’ mode in Darktable. That’s not like Lightroom. It’s more like a tool mode. Darktable doesn’t have the ‘lightroom’ quality of the ‘lightroom’ quality you get from Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop Suite. You can’t just have a ‘realtime’ setting in Lightroom. It’s a much better way of working and it has better performance. In DNG, you simply click on the frame and drag it around. There’s not much you can do to change the picture in DNG. DNG is often much slower than an equivalent JPEG or RAW with no option for a ‘realtime’ setting.
DNG is a smaller format with fewer layers than JPEG. DNG is much slower to import and export compared to JPEG. This is because JPEG was designed for large file sizes and the DNG files allow you to resize with a click of a button. In terms of quality, it’s the same as RAW or RAW + JPG – a lot better than RAW + JPG. Most of all, if you want to make an artistic image, it’s faster than JPEG.
Darktable is more expensive because its development costs.
As we’ve just seen, the main reason why you shouldn’t use Lightroom or Photoshop is they’re more expensive because the development is much more complex. Adobe does a lot of development for them both and it’s not a small amount.
What about the cost of the cameras?
Lightroom and Photoshop use cameras by the pound. The cameras themselves might be cheap, but the development costs are expensive because there’s some significant development time which adds on to the prices.
