“Before you do anything, you need to ask yourself what do you think photography to be,” says Joe Sacco, Photo Editor at American Photographer. “I’ve shot for a long time, ever since I was a little kid. There’s nothing wrong with being an amateur. I’m proud of what I do, but you gotta know when to stop. For example, the difference between being a professional photographer and a student or a first-timer. You have to know when to shut up and learn. That’s important. In my case, I learned.”

In order to get you started on your editing career, you have to understand two things:
1. You are a photographer
2. You can’t edit
We’ve covered how to get started in the field of photo editing (see What Is Photo Editing), and when to stop editing photography (see When To Stop Editing Photography). In short, by knowing what you know, you need to use yourself and the tools at hand to get your photos finished, looking great. “It’s like being a photographer and saying, ‘Look at this, that. Take your time and have fun.’ It’s important to have fun. There’s no reason to keep going when you’re doing it.” Sacco says, “I would never tell a student to stop and make the most of their education because of some photo editing software. I’d be like ‘This is a fun industry. Stop the madness’ and be grateful for all the great work I’m doing. It’s a fun way to have fun.”
It is important to note that editing is done on film. When working with film, you must know your camera’s setting and what settings you can safely set. For instance, it is easy to go way over the speed of light setting and not get the shadows right. Or you may see people using overexposed lights as their background and not knowing how to use them properly. This isn’t an amateur trick—your camera has to be properly set and you must know what settings you can use safely.
