Book editing, as well as the type of book editor, is determined by the type of book being edited. A book editor is responsible for selecting the appropriate edition of the book for the intended audience and the text that must be reproduced within the book to fulfill the client’s needs. A book editor can also be responsible for making sure that the text is presented in an understandable form and/or that the content is understandable.
For example—I would need a publisher to give me a complete book at the ready and in a format suitable for a particular publication. A book editor might also need to edit a draft manuscript that I may submit to a client who may or may not allow a revision. In this situation, the book editor must also select an agent, as well as select a proofreader. Depending on the type of book and how close the project has come to completion, a book editor might need to work with an agency to facilitate the creation of the manuscript—a book editor might also be responsible for facilitating book formatting, proofreading, proofing, and proofing the book’s final copy.
Book editors should ask themselves as they are researching the book that they may be editing an old book that is no longer in use, but that must still be published. For example, if I have a manuscript for a novel titled “The World Is a Beautiful Place,” and I can only find it in a dusty and out of date dictionary—I should search the internet for “beautiful place” and see if I can find any book with an exact match. (If no book with “the world is a beautiful place” appears on the internet, I must be in a good mood!) The important things to remember when searching for “the world is a beautiful place” and finding similar information is that the book editor should search for “the beautiful place in the sky” to find the location of the earth, and use that to locate and compare that information so they can know to which extent he or she should add to the text in order to make the book readable to a different audience.
