The word “image editing” doesn’t quite ring true today as it used to. It is now more or less defined as computer programs for manipulating images. Some examples include images, logos, and computer software which manipulate or modify images.

What is an image editing tool?
Image editing requires a very specialized program capable of managing a digital camera image. The image editing tool should be a program which can work with both RAW and JPEG images. If you can use an app for manipulating RAW images you are already in good shape. If images and images manipulation programs don’t work together easily enough then you probably won’t be able to get anything done with a computer image.
How do I choose a computer image editing tool?
There are a lot of options out there as far as digital camera image editing programs are concerned. The most popular options are Adobe CS6 (CS6 is a very common image editing program) and Photoshop. This isn’t my favorite choice as I really don’t like its lack of color inversion. Some users of Photoshop will even complain about its dark background.
Other Photoshop options include The Grunge (a clone of Photoshop’s CS2 and CS3) which does some things very differently. Some have great Photoshop brush support but that’s usually not something for me.
There are also a variety of other programs which all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Each has an ideal toolkit. I have tried to put here as much information as possible about what sort of program I’d personally prefer to use for image editing.
Are all digital cameras digital?
No, most stills cameras don’t have digital files at all. There are plenty of stills cameras that still do have digital files, though. Some older analogue models will have digital files even though they seem to have no optical viewfinder. The most common digital still photography is with still cameras. There are also digital still cameras for video and stills. I’m not going to cover these.
What other aspects of an image editing program will I want to know about?
There are a lot of things which will be in your image editing software that you will have to configure yourself.
