Welcome to Part 2 of our series about the evolution of online advertising in North America. In the previous post we looked at the evolution of ad networks from the old print ad models to the new dynamic of digital advertising. In Part 2, we look at how the evolution of online ad networks evolved along a similar path, with the first of the many ad networks, Google Adwords, being purchased by an even more powerful, and well-funded, online advertising company, eBay.

A long time coming

When we consider the evolution of online advertising, let’s set aside the debate as to whether online advertising is actually more effective than traditional print advertising. We can make a strong argument that it is. It has been in the news about online media. It appears to have become the number one way for online media users to get advertising and to reach new audiences online. There has been a significant number of studies conducted over the years in order to determine the effect of these new online advertisements on the user experience. They have found that online ads on these sites are much higher quality than in traditional markets or other forms of advertising.

As a result, the cost per advertisement has decreased and the time that these readers spend looking for and experiencing these ads has decreased. On that note, we can now move onto the next phase of this evolution and the emergence of the Google Adwords campaign.

What is a Google AdWords campaign?

As you know, online ads on the web are the result of paying to buy content. Advertising is a business, and advertisers have to use that business model to achieve profit. The Google Adwords campaign is a way advertisers pay to find and buy advertising on the web. Ads on the web are designed for the purpose of creating traffic and sales. For example, the following advertisement shows users of a certain website, and then shows Google Adwords ads designed to show that page. To see which ads have been displayed, you would need to click through to the targeted website, and then click the “More Ads” box to see ads
