What do these terms mean?
The ‘Retouch’ label indicates work done by someone who attempts to make the image look more pleasant than it was prior to the processing
The ‘Editing’ label indicates editing by the same person by altering images which are not previously retouched
What is the difference between using ‘Retouch’ to cover up or cover up the fact a retouched image was used?
Does the ‘Retouch’ label mean using a photo as a ‘fake’ or fake a photo – or both?
Is what is being addressed simply editing, or both?
The term ‘Retouch’ can now apply primarily to digital photography, though often ‘faking’ or ‘faking’ is used, too, in relation to other photographic and film work.
A retouched photo can be used as ‘good’ illustration in a book if it is not too ‘sharp’ and ‘sharpened’ in any way. It has the potential, however, to be distorted if it has too much of everything, or, as we can see from this picture, it is very much on the soft side (and therefore not too sharp.)
Some people have objected to using ‘retouching’ as a term of abuse; they believe that it is not clear in the terms to what end the work is being done, and as a result we do not have a common understanding of the processes involved. But we do have a common understanding of what happens.
Photographers do not edit – and this is not meant to imply that they are not capable of doing so; they do it in a way that results in something that is visually pleasing.
I’ve read that certain photographers ‘take control’ after they are done with something. This might be right, as the images are usually still in the process of creation, and are not entirely finished until the finished product is put on display. But there is no need to control the work. It is done as it is created.
When we look at a photo, its form and function are apparent and we are quite aware that the photo contains things like light and colour – and that the picture doesn’t necessarily express its purpose or meaning.
The question then arises as to when we make a comment. The question I find myself grappling with most of the time is this – should the use of the expression ‘retouch’ mean to make an alteration so as to alter the image to improve it for
