To get kids’ heads around the concept, they ask them to memorize a series of letters. For example, to get kids’ attention, they ask them to memorize the letter “R” as their first name.
But learning to play piano isn’t easy.
“It can be very overwhelming in some cases because they’re used to playing a lot of chords,” said Shaina Shook, who studies music at Stanford.
In other words, children don’t have a clue about what chords look like in a melody or to how much movement they should apply in the middle of a chord. That limits what it’s possible to build on their knowledge.
“This is a real constraint because children think about chords in terms of two-beat intervals or three-beat intervals,” said Shook.
So when it comes to learning classical music piano, kids need the tools to learn along with all the learning that’s inevitable.
This also explains why learning to play the piano isn’t a straightforward skill.
“It’s a lot about trial and error,” Shook said.
The biggest hurdle to music learning
For many kids, the biggest hurdle to learning to play piano is learning what a chord is. So what can parents do to help them navigate the complexity of playing classical music?
“First of all you’re going to want to be aware of the key of a scale,” Hensley said.
If your child isn’t aware of the key of a scale, that means they’re not getting the most out of the lessons this course will impart.
“That could mean the way you are playing the music is not up to par,” she said. “In that case we would need to help them learn how to play the scales.”
A scale is a small series of notes that helps you build a foundation for chords. The key for learning to play scales is to always stay learning new scales.
“At first you want to just stick with what you’re learning right now because once you do that, you see you’re not getting any better,” Shook said.
But if that doesn’t work – and you still don’t believe they’re getting any better — then your options are either to add in more scales, or work as hard as they can to figure out what scales their teachers are talking about in lessons.
