An older person is much less likely to become a piano player than one under the age of 10.

One reason for this is that a student in the early years of piano learning has already made many mistakes with his hands that won’t change much if he tries again. The student also probably has very little idea of the proper hand position. He probably has learned to play with a certain hand only in order to feel the piano keys.

One method of “reducing” the mistakes by teaching older people hand position is to teach them to reach the keys. For older people, there are no other options.

The best way to teach a piano player to reach a key is to play the music slowly.

Younger piano players will start to practice until the music moves quickly. This takes time, so gradually increase the tempo of the music. When this takes more time then reduce the tempo down to where it would be for an older person, i.e. 30 and below or 60 and below.

How to use the right hand to play the piano (Video)

The right hand is an excellent way for older people to play the piano and is often overlooked by younger performers.

This is because older people, like everyone else, often think of their right hand as being just the same as their left hand. They don’t think properly about the different positions that the right and left hands take in order to play the piano.

While playing the piano, your left hand is playing the keys while your right hand is controlling the left instrument. This is a good practice as it puts your fingers on the key and then gradually gives you control of it, but that’s not the same thing as playing with your proper right hand.

To practice a right-handed version of the piano, you will need to reach the keys and play the music using both your right and left hands.
