Are there any apps specifically designed for learning how to play the instrument?
Not really! For the most part, it’s more of a trial and error thing. As a beginner, it would probably be best to just use some free resources (like Piano.de) to get a feeling of what to play. And if those go poorly as you get more familiar with how the music is structured, you can try to play on more difficult music to get a feel for it.
What do I need to bring along to learn piano on the go?
For this, there are two main things:
1 – A smartphone. I recommend using the Samsung Galaxy S5 at first. This will also keep you safe since most of the apps and resources can be accessed from a mobile device. If you don’t have one, it might be wise to invest in an Android phone. I personally prefer Android over iPhones (I like the overall layout and I think that’s largely what makes it different from an iPhone).
2 – The right device. I’m not sure where the consensus is on the best devices, but all of the devices I’ve tried to teach the instrument seem to be a bit heavy and bulky. The Samsung Galaxy S5 was my second go-round and I definitely didn’t want to carry around a laptop to get the most from it, although that can be convenient when things go really wrong.
I personally use the Galaxy Note 3 though. It is not as big as the Galaxy S4 in terms of screen size, battery size (which is slightly larger with the device), processor speed, etc. This is a huge plus as I tend to be in a lot of classes in larger groups and can easily take a couple of minutes to get to something if I lose contact or lose my signal. It is also relatively cheap compared to other smartphones.
