I’ve read a lot of books written by pianists, and the most important fact for me was that we don’t practice as much as we thought. We should try to get 100 hours of practice a month. But we probably play only 30-45% of that because of our other commitments or things getting in the way. For the first 50-75 hours of a lesson, we should get as much practice as possible. The lesson should be fun. A lot of my teachers said that a good lesson should be like watching a really good movie. It should have a really good ending, a really good theme. It should have strong drama. And it should be fun. As a pianist, I don’t know if that kind of thing I’m into.
One thing is that we can focus more and more on the music—on playing the music correctly and getting into the emotion of the piece, rather than on the other aspects of how to play the piano well. I think playing the piano, as an activity, is very important to me—and in particular, my favorite activity. We do that to a lot of our family and friends, and it’s amazing how often they can make mistakes. But we know it’s not really a major issue. We just spend more time doing music than they do.
For many students, I would say the one thing that’s important that I wish we all knew is that, whether you’re starting out or you’re on top of your game, practicing is good and worth doing. If you get too anxious, as I do, that’s a sign of inexperience and we can improve that if we just practice. Practice keeps you busy so that even if something doesn’t go right in a lesson, you’ll spend the next 10 minutes listening to the melody again. This sort of keeps you busy over the course of a whole lesson.
The other thing that’s important is that you try not to think so much about doing the thing. It’s not the most important thing. I’m still playing the piano, and I keep thinking I’m playing the piano, even though it is pretty much the best thing I’ve ever tried to do.
