The Trump administration may soon begin a crackdown on unauthorized immigration. With the Republican controlled Congress holding the levers of power, President Donald Trump could be looking for more ways to keep illegals from committing crimes. On Tuesday, the DHS and the Office of Immigration Advocacy released a new policy report that states that unauthorized immigrants may be denied entry to the U.S. if they commit crimes like murder, rape, robbery or aggravated assault. The policy, in conjunction with the newly-recalled Secure Communities program, is just another example of White House efforts to target unauthorized immigrants for deportation.
While this policy may have broad appeal, some worry that it could also put a chilling effect on local law enforcement.
“In the face of an immigration crackdown, law enforcement officers across the U.S. already feel like they need to get creative. They do everything they can to keep people from returning to the U.S.’s streets. This will only make it worse,” said John Sandwegson, a retired NYPD detective and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. “There are just too many unknowns here.”
If these reports turn out to be correct, illegal immigrants could face increased scrutiny and increased risk of deportation after committing crimes. This would place further strains on local law enforcement and make it difficult for communities to protect their citizens.
Law enforcement officials across the country are already struggling with an unprecedented number of illegal immigration arrests. In addition to Trump’s immigration policies, the Trump administration has stepped into an existing program that forces jurisdictions across the country to share gang enforcement data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The National Gang Intelligence Center, which was established by Executive Order issued shortly after the 9/11 attacks, has been working since 2007 to gather data with the intention of countering international drug cartel smuggling.
