I can’t. There’s too much stuff on the internet. I learned the classical parts to the songs online, but the rest of it… there’s not enough quality material available.
What would you say is the most difficult part about learning piano?
The most difficult part is getting the rhythm down. I don’t mean the notes themselves, although that’s part of it, because then I can improvise. It means getting the timing down, the tempo down. There’s no rhyme, just rhythm, so it’s really hard to do that.
Is there any way to improve your coordination? And is there something you can do as a pianist to improve coordination?
There’s an amazing video on youtube that is by a man named Timo Eriksson [a Swedish pianist who, despite being an expert, couldn’t get a break from the piano]. He’s got a video where he’s got all these kids playing and it’s like… it’s like…
“This is the way they’re playing, this isn’t my way…”
So the kids are playing to these big-name instructors, and they come out of there with this terrible coordination.
You can’t just have a little bit of stuff and not use it… If you don’t have your rhythm down with the other things, then it’s hard to play. I think the most efficient way is by memorizing the notes.
How so? Do you have any rules? And do you have any books you can recommend?
I don’t have any rules, though I have a book with a lot of ideas.
I’m just saying that the more you work on yourself to get a rhythm down, the more you begin to learn how to get in sync with other notes and keep it all together so it sounds natural, because then it sounds like something you’d listen to. Your brain will go “Oh God, this is really good! I don’t even know why I’ve ever been this terrible on a piano.” And that’ll get better and better, and eventually your brain will begin to trust your instincts.
When should you go for that music lesson? What is good for you?
If you’re a beginner, I’d say that’s for an hour, a little bit longer. If you’re a good pianist, you should always go to a session and be on a schedule and do it one hour at a time. If you really
