But not one of these speakers—any speaker, really—even mentioned race. “I don’t think we want to talk about the fact that there is a race in the United States,” a young woman who would not give her name told me. “This isn’t an opportunity for me to tell my story. It’s better for other people to tell theirs. We all have to stand together.”
This is not an isolated example. The American Civil Liberties Union has collected more than a thousand examples, from hundreds of groups, of events that include a lack of race as a central theme.
