I’ve played a lot less than that (since this is a blog post, not a school lesson). I’m still pretty good though and can play very fast as well as well as I could during my formal piano studies, and I used to teach piano. That being said, I probably should start to practice more. It feels wrong to be sitting at my keyboard all day – especially when it’s almost time for bed. I would do my best to make the piano sound as natural as possible so there is no real tension and no struggle between mind and keyboard.
Have you ever heard “the best piano players are the ones who use the piano a lot? They’re good. They play in groups” – or that one of the best piano players was always a great musician…I didn’t know such a thing? That’s really good, since I think that you know yourself very well. Have you ever thought, “Well, I can’t really master the piano until next summer – maybe it would be better to practice a little harder so I will be at the level where I can just play the piano like everyone else?”
I have heard that when you improve as a pianist you can learn many things – not just music theory, but also language, philosophy, and lots of other things. In terms of pianists, if you want to keep learning new things, then it will be good to practice more, and you will not only learn more but also be more intuitive, and this will increase the amount of knowledge you have so you will be able to learn more, and then more, and it will all help to make you better.
Practice!
Practice makes you a better pianist. But that doesn’t mean it’s a magic pill, so why do we all want to become great pianists? It’s a big question, but it has some answers. I used to tell the world all the time:
“Practice makes perfect.”
And I know that people think I just want to make you sound amazing every time you play…don’t worry, I don’t. However, I believe that I do want you to sound awesome every time you play. There are a lot of people who know how to play great pianos better than you. They play really well, and they often play with a lot of passion, with a lot of intensity, with a high-level of feeling. But all that does is make you sound a bit “good”.
