What will it do?
Flowkey is a simple piece of software that adds “friction” to the process of adding a new email address to your Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail or Hotmail account. It’s like using a simple “click-to-read” button, but it’s designed to force you to use an internet-connected device such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop or other computer.
The process, as you can imagine, takes some getting used to.
Your browser is designed to force you to connect to the internet (at least to its fullest extent) every time you open an email.
Flowkey works by forcing you to “breathe” through that click, so you do whatever you are intending to do with your email, as you open it. If, for example, you need to access the internet from work on a mobile device, that won’t mean that you will be prompted to connect. Instead, you’ll be prompted to sign in to something, which is a little extra clicking on your phone.
Flowkey, too, is designed to force you to use internet technology from a mobile phone (and thus, from a location where you can’t see it). So you can’t browse from your office or your home when using Flowkey.
Are Flowkey apps available in all countries?
Of the many apps offered by Flowkey (there is no separate app for Gmail for example), the iPhone app in particular has some unique features.
For example, it can do simple checks to ensure that all the people who registered as you in your email account aren’t being spammed. If you’re the person with the most accounts, you’ll notice that you also tend to have a lot of messages from other people who have the same account.
This means you should pay more attention to the emails that arrive from your inbox. In general, Flowkey won’t check your email while you’re using it, but if you do decide to check your email while it’s running on your phone, Flowkey will ask you to “uncheck” email in your account.
