This is the best question I’ve gotten this week. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and can’t help but ask: how much guitar practice should you do on weeknights? Are there times when guitar practice is too much for a given person?
I have been taking a daily practice routine with myself and I’ve realized the difference it can make in my life. By taking a daily practice routine, even if I go on an online course to learn more about guitar, I can focus all my attention on the skill at hand. I just have to focus on the guitar, and when I’m not playing guitar (when I’m not watching shows like The Voice or playing gigs or touring) I don’t have the time to focus on the guitar.
With a daily practice routine I have the time to be in the present moment (I don’t have to do so much thinking about what to do today, it’s done!) and just focus on what I want to learn. I’m much happier with how I feel, and I’m having a much better time.
What is the most important thing you need to learn guitar?
There are a lot of things that you need to learn to play music, even if it’s something that you haven’t done before.
How do you balance yourself between studying and practicing?
There’s an important balance here. I work a job that I love and I also study and practice for it. It is a bit of a paradox, and I think I’m in a unique point in my life. I always have a job to go to, and I don’t have to work all day to pay my bills, but I still study for my exams, and when I am going to school or work I can still focus on my studies, and that’s a really great advantage of living in Los Angeles. I also don’t have to worry about what happens with finances because I’ve got such an amazing lifestyle.
My other job is an interesting challenge because I am constantly working (and learning) to be able to pay my bills and still be able to play music. I don’t need to worry about how money is getting spent or what the next move is for the band as it’s happening on the same time as my work. I can work on a song and have time to practice guitar before I go to work.
