I think it will be more difficult [to learn piano] than the piano was to be a violin-player. One of the things that is very difficult for me is that you can only learn to play one instrument. That I was a violin player for ten years was impossible for me to play with my voice. I couldn’t play with my voice but I could play with piano because I had good fingers. So I wasn’t really a beginner, I was like the violin-master but I couldn’t play with my voice or have my fingers to play my violin.
There are also people who have problems with their voice and can’t play a piano without great difficulty. I don’t have that problem. My voice is in one piece, but it is very, very difficult to play piano because it is really difficult because of the way you must practice it. If you play like this [i.e. you start with a long run] one of your fingers will start going, and so what happens is that you have to practice very, very hard just to become a pianist and then they make you play an entire piece, and you will get so good that you can do everything.
Musicians of my generation, when people asked us, how were our skills? I said that there’s only one way to really learn, and that was to play the piano. Now people say it is impossible to learn piano because of its nature and that there are other things. I am not sure they are right. I think that you have to learn to play the piano and you will improve, because you are able to play on it. I think you are more or less able to learn it, but it is not the way it was for the whole period of your life. There are many good teachers, there are students, there are many players. To me it was the way it was to be a professional musician. When I came to the US, it was completely different. Now some people think it is impossible to learn the piano.
You have said that in the 1970s and 80s the piano was the last instrument of value in your life, and it is a difficult choice to choose to play another instrument at this point in your life.
Actually the last instrument that I loved was the violin. But also people think that if you’re a singer you can’t learn a new instrument. That is a different question. I still love [the guitar], or at least I think I still love it
