It varies from person to person, but when I’m playing, I feel confident I’ll do the best I can, and that the music will come out naturally and without much effort. This is a difficult question because there’s probably some parts that are more difficult than others, but overall piano is a piece of music that has a high degree of difficulty. Sometimes you don’t feel like you have it (and if you really can’t play, this should be pretty obvious). It is very hard to focus. You’re trying to put all the parts together and keep it all in place and that’s why it’s a hard instrument to be a good performer of.
But the music and the performance doesn’t give you any sense of accomplishment. It just sounds like you’re just playing through the motions and that’s it. I’m a pianist with a lot of skill, and if I start playing something, it happens very quickly, but it’s not like I win all the time or anything like that. I do, however, like to see something go well, even if it takes me a while to figure out what’s going on. For one thing, I always remember to relax and not force myself to play something that I don’t have that much experience in. For another, you never know what you’re going to get in your head. You might be surprised if I can hit a note or that you’re just going to sit there and do whatever.
Have you learned any good ways to prepare with the piano? How do you work with other musicians to make sure your solos sound good by yourself? Or is this what you have to work out through trial and error?
My piano teacher has taught me a lot about piano solos. It took a long time for me to learn these things, but I’m pretty good at it now. I use a technique called “Swinging a Scale.” My father used to play the same way, he had a little jazz background, which helped with that. It’s easier to master than it is to learn it like I did. When I play solos on the electric keyboard, when you’re trying to figure out the melody, all you have to do is play the chord pattern and the melody will automatically open up and become a part of your playing. I know you can play piano at any speed, but it’s much harder at higher speeds or slower. At a higher speed your body is going to be stretched so when you hit those notes,
