Yes. You don’t need to be at a piano to do a concerto, it is just about learning enough piano that you can play along with it in your free time. Guitar is another matter. Guitar is very practical. There are very few pianists that are good enough and do not have a good sound. There are however a few piano students that have a good sound but do not play a lot of music and would be better served at a guitar lessons. If you can get to a concerto with piano the ability to play a bunch of pieces over and over again is quite helpful and is very rewarding in a way because it is easy on your fingers. It is also very educational. The concerto is not all about the music and the teacher will have a good time, but you will learn and you will get to play music for the rest of your life. It may be a good time to pick up a bass or guitar since you will be able to hear the music more clearly. If your teacher does not know how to play any music and does not know what to do with you, she or he is not teaching you music and may be just wasting your time. I have met a lot of pianists here who are good students but may not have much music experience and are just not motivated enough to do a good job. You can also learn a bit by just talking about music to people who don’t listen to music. If you can make people understand what you are talking about you will learn a lot. The music teacher has to know music to make you learn it. That is just the way that the system works. Even if we don’t have time to play the piano that we do study the other forms (viola, cello, guitar, whatever), we go to concerts and learn to play as many pieces as we can here at the concert. We also learn a lot on the field as well (we usually play a lot of viola). Just being alive and being able to travel will always improve your memory, but you do have to keep that in mind. Most of the students at my school learn only about a fifth of the way through the concerto (the rest is based on playing the piece as the teacher tells you to play it. So the students who don’t know the song by heart are still learning about the piece on the field during practice). I teach a lot of them and sometimes they just won’t stick to the concerto.
