How much does it cost? What should I avoid?
This question will get you some of the wrong answers by not including all elements of the process. I’m not here to teach you how to learn, but how the process of learning actually works.
This page explains the various elements of learning piano, including things you should avoid (which I’ll cover in a few paragraphs to hopefully help clear things up).
If you can use a calculator when you study music, go ahead. It will take you from zero to 200 on the keyboard in about 60 hours.
Don’t start with basic exercises (i.e. no scales)
I’m a big fan of simple exercises, but even for beginners, a basic repertoire is important for mastering scales and arpeggios.
I’ve found that if I start with this, I can easily get 20 years without practicing any notes in scales.
How many chords do I need in a song?
For beginners: A single chord? No, don’t bother. Some people find the idea of learning chords helpful.
If the scale length/diatonic intervals you’re looking for aren’t present in a given song, then it’s almost a no brainer to start with scales and make chord progressions.
How many scales per song?
This is a tricky one. Some people will say you have to learn all the different scales in a single song.
That’s not true – a basic song with only one scale per scale is fine for learning scales and arpeggios.
Here’s how to pick 1-2 specific scales per song to work on first, but if you’re really good at playing and know each song, don’t be afraid to learn 1-2 songs and learn another 3-4 scales per song if your goal is to improve your ability to play the arpeggio charts (which I’ll cover in later sections)
If you have a favorite scale you like to practice but don’t understand, just ask a friend to help.
How many scales per song? The same scale in each song.
This is one of the easiest lessons to figure out.
If there’s one note for each scale in a song, it’s much easier to learn how to play them all.
