The city council of San Juan in Puerto Rico voted yesterday (Oct, 24, 2015) to declare Puerto Rico its fifth state.
The decision to declare the territory a state, according to the New York Times, is a “major breakthrough in the struggle for independence for nearly three centuries.” The Times writes that the decision “makes San Juan the only island in the Caribbean that has formally declared itself a state to the United States, making it even more important in the ongoing struggle between the United States and Cuba’s Fidel Castro regime.”
According to the San Juan Herald, the new United States territory has been the object of a lot of controversy.
The city council voted 6-0 to approve the decision. The next step will be a vote of the United States Congress, whose decision will affect how much power Puerto Rico would retain.
