There has always been a difference in how a lot of people approach music—there is no single right way to play any instrument. At any given time, there are people who can sing, others who can play the guitar, and still others who can play the piano.
Which instrument was the hardest to learn from your parents when you first started playing drums?
My dad played drums in the family band—he was a musician from age 5 to 12—and also learned his rhythm and chords in the kitchen while his father would sing along with him. In the summertime, they would play at the lake after school. There was a pool there, and my dad and my uncle—my brother—would pool for the rest of the summer. The drum is my favorite instrument. I learned the chord progression of a song I love (Buddy Holly), and I was taught how to play the drums by my dad.
What instruments do you plan to study in college?
Music, I guess. I’m planning to study business and marketing. But I’ll take the time to teach myself. Hopefully I can go to college, get a couple years of music education and be able to share what I’ve learned with other people.
What was music like growing up?
We had our own church. My dad started a church as a volunteer and I was a member of choir. One Sunday he had his two best friends, the two girls in his choir group, over to help him. They would put on an acoustic set and do whatever they wanted. We had one or two songs they’d sing, but they were usually playing along to a band. We knew how many people were there, but we didn’t know how many people had any interest in music. We’d get very excited just from how many people turned and looked at us in the choir. Then my dad told us to get our clothes out of the house because he had some work to do. He then got his guitar, played a few notes and the boys and I cheered him on. My dad took us home to my mother and my brother and his wife to play all the songs we hadn’t played in the choir as kids. I just remember them laughing at our antics the whole time.
