Which instrument should I learn first? – Learning Piano At 40

I’ve never done any type of “study” until now. I was wondering. Any comments?

I am a first year, and a music major, but I have a few recommendations for my next instrument: The keyboard will be the most logical first, though I love the stringed-guitar. So what instrument should I learn first? I’ve never done any type of “study” until now. I was wondering. Any comments?

I have not studied music before, but I have a few thoughts on that: (1) What’s the best way to learn?

(2) What are your goals? (3) Do you have any resources/books or blogs you recommend for learning? (4) Do you want to learn for music-only? For example: do you want to learn to play piano or any other musical instrument? (5) Do you want to be a bassist or singer? Where do the interests lie for you, as it pertains to your musical interests?

Thanks for your time!

The piano is much more fun to pick up than stringed instruments. There’s less of a learning curve, no doubt about it, and you get to use the piano more. I would also recommend learning a stringless instrument because it can actually make you learn more about your guitar playing than if you started with any other instrument. But I haven’t studied stringed instruments beyond high school, and have never tried them, just play them and see what sticks. I actually don’t know what all the “new” players in the violin class are doing, so I’m just going to say that I think they’re not making as strong as an impact as I think they should be.

I went to college for a music BA in a few years ago so I have experience for this.

Here is a link to this guy’s lecture series . He also provides lessons for bass students which he is very passionate about. His series are absolutely amazing as he shows students techniques and strategies that are usually hidden behind a ton of other explanations that are more complicated than the student is comfortable with.

I’ve learned some great lessons from both of these people.

I learned piano in an hour from Chris O’Malley.

Chris O’Malley is a fantastic drummer with a lot of experience. I used to be a huge fan of his but he’s now taken a really positive turn. You can see some of that on Youtube.
