It’s almost like your brain becomes less responsive. It’s what we call “reactive memory.” When I first started out as a kid (18) I had an average of a million songs that I was singing for. Now you hear a lot more than a million and a half. You get better with age, you’re able to learn music faster. People used to think I was a very young singer, but now I’m a man.
What were the hardest moments?
Getting in a car accident. I was 20 years old and I was in the trunk of this car with my wife, and the car got into the road (in a pileup). It was the worst thing I had ever had to do in my life, I remember it vividly. She lost her leg, and she had to move off the road and we drove for 10 miles, and I had the strangest feeling. I went back to work and kept working, just a little more, just to keep me going. It was the toughest, though I don’t think there was any reason for it – that you’re going to break your back from driving a car all the time.
How is it possible to sing the same music over and over again, and still retain your vocal skills?

If you’re going to start an opera with a singer, why the hell not let us see some of your amazing opera repertoire?
I’m too lazy! I don’t make many operas. A year of working on one opera could cost me $5 million! I don’t care where I can do some opera, it’s important I do.
I heard you’re a composer and lyricist for the movie “Saving Mr. Banks.” What’s it like working together and playing off each other?
It was really nice, very emotional with great music written by us. He’s an incredible guy. There’s something inspiring about him. It’s always interesting because it doesn’t seem like we’re doing anything. We’re just doing our thing, and he takes credit for how it goes.
One of the things we learned, working with him, is to listen for the subtleties in his music. That’s what made it such a pleasure to work with him this time. And I didn’t want to
