The second-best football team in the country went to the Super Bowl this year, but for a second-year coach, who is getting fired?
That’s the question coach Gus Malzahn and his first-year, “Rise to the Top” players have been asking when the season reaches end.
For most of the season, Michigan was not the greatest team in the nation. Malzahn has been able to get these three key players who have carried many of the team’s deficiencies over the course of the year. They have been good enough to get through the first four weeks of this year’s schedule. Without their talent, however, the Wolverines’ chances to repeat as national champions are seriously slim.
They’re a great team. The defense has been excellent with the starters, which leaves their offense in disarray. At best, it can be average, which is fine because Malzahn is doing what he has to in his quest to be a top coach in college football.
Malzahn’s biggest issue this year has been an injury plagued offensive line that has been able to be more effective but still can easily be improved. The offensive line has suffered from the loss of two starters — left tackle Taylor Lewan and right tackle Alex Balducci — and the loss of their starting guard, and they’ve allowed an average of 21 sacks per game. They were unable to prevent offensive lineman Riley Reiff from becoming a beast, as Auburn did to the Wolverines two weeks ago.
