Well no really it is actually the other way around. Bass has more of a melody to it meaning it has more in common with a guitar. So that’s the theory, and when you look at what goes on in the studio this is how I get the best out of my bass because the whole song has such a melody to it; I’m not going from note to note, I’m not singing ‘one’ and ‘two’, I’m singing ‘bass’, ‘snare’.
In this song you had a guitar solo before and now here you’ve got an amazing bass solo – is this something you could have done just because you have more of a melody in the song?
Oh it’s so easy. I think because we’ve gone through so many songs, that the songs we’ve got now that don’t have any melody, and a lot of times I’ll get a chorus and I’m thinking, ‘Oh this is so simple but it’s so great, and we are singing this really nice but it’s just this little word, and to me it’s not that memorable.’ So because of how I get the melody to myself, I think the melody is always the thing to take to the next level. If you’re playing a guitar part with a melody I think it just comes together more easily.
Do you find it easier to sing to a bass solo?
No, not really but it is really easy to get a nice little melody out of a bass solo because you’re just hitting it. You don’t have to think about it too much, just hit it. I always find the bass more challenging to sing to because you’re not necessarily trying to sing for an audience. We’re just singing for ourselves, I think it’s great.
Does anyone have a theory/experience of singing to a bass solo which you feel is better than others?
This is something that goes back to where I started, I’m very sensitive but I don’t do it like I used to, and I think in certain places it comes off to a lot of people a bit too much but with this track it just fits perfectly as guitar and bass.
Can you talk about how easy it is to use a drum kit like the Roland Juno 60 and Juno 60 II?
For me I have a Roland Juno 60 and Juno 60 II at home, and I’ve been using them and I just don’t like how the drum machine has become so important and in my opinion
