Does that mean that Oud can be played with a guitar? This question is never posed to me, and I’ve never seen such a question put to me. Oud is the hardest thing to play, so Oud has been a huge source of frustration for almost all of the people who have tried. It’s a strange thing, playing on a guitar, a heavy guitar…it’s almost like the two instruments are two separate objects, two separate entities that are both playing. I mean in some ways it’s like a keyboard and a bass guitar. The bass guitar is only useful for chords and the keyboard is useful to play melodies, and the guitar just plays up one instrument and plays something else.
So is the guitar easier than the oud?
It’s the hardest thing, but it’s the easiest instrument I know. The second easiest is the ukulele, which is even easier. It’s a weird instrument to play on because you have to be very, very precise. But the bass guitar is very close to a bass instrument in terms of speed and control… and it takes a lot of time to play and it’s usually a pain to do something well done… but it’s good in the same way that playing an electric guitar would be good in a rock band— you’d make sure it’s a nice rhythm. But the bass guitar has that bass flavor to it, it can be quite intense and it gives you a bigger range than a guitar. It’s an enjoyable process to learn the bass guitar. It’s almost a different instrument— a good thing.
Who would you most want to see do the bass guitar?
I don’t know where to start with bass guitar. I’m a pretty jazz type, I’m not a very good player but I do like bass and I’m into jazz… which is why my band is called the ‘Rumbluz Band’. I think there are some great bass players right now, people like Keith Jarrett, Paul Simonon, Dave Holland, Pete Hines… but I think there are plenty of good bass players that I don’t like that much or that are so un-musical. I like guys that are more in tune, that you can pick apart their stuff with a fingernail or a pair of scissors. And what happens sometimes is he starts doing that too.
