A: It’s called a “pump hand”, it’s my first “pump hand” I’ve got, and it’s all over the place. I have about a dozen of them. They’re basically a hand-arm of a stick/drum/banjo. Just a stick and a finger to the beat. And some finger-picking. I have a couple of sticks and a couple strings in my repertoire. I’m more of a wood strummer, I think, in the fact that I also play two electric guitars, I play a bass, I’m the second-string bassist on the acoustic/electric thing, which is something that I used to do when I was younger, which is really awesome — but the other thing that I do is have two basses, which is one of the things that made me kind of like to break down the guitar and have my own guitar for the summer. I started playing around with the ukulele and I kind of got into it in the fall of 2013. I learned to play it on and off in the summer, which was great. It was also great that I was able to do that for one week to get to the point where you know the chords. There’s a time and a place for a bass or a two-stringed instrument, but I’m not sure there’s a time and place for a two-stringed instrument. So, it was kind of like a dream come true to be able to break down the ukulele and have the bass and it was just awesome to be able to do that.
Do you find yourself in any particular situation that reminds you of music?
A: I love rock music, but I love anything that I can use on the ukulele and vice versa. I’m really a big music lover, so I get to play an awful lot of music that I love on the ukulele, not only my favorite band I like to listen to is Pink Floyd — and my favorite Beatles song is “A Day in the Life.” And then there’s also stuff that I like to listen to in the evening time that I’ll play on the ukulele, like “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” or “I’ve Got a Feeling.” Those are great, too, because I just get to play a lot of good music that makes me happy.
