There’s a good variety of songs to choose from. In practice, you’ll need to find the tune you like without a teacher or a friend. When you’re ready, just sit down and just sing your tunes. Don’t worry about the song being perfect; there are plenty of good tunes out there which are easy to learn and play.
How do you know if you sound good on an ukulele?
For me, my sound doesn’t look as good as others’ and my ukulele sound isn’t as good. People usually think, ‘Hey! He’s playing great!’ when they hear me. They usually don’t realize that they’re not. I try and play what I can when I play it, and I try to keep it simple. It’s not that you have to make any big changes or whatever to sound great. It’s not like there’s only one right ukulele, or one wrong ukulele. We don’t know, and I don’t ever want a ukulele for myself. I’ve learned my sound and it sounds great, so I keep going back to it. It’s pretty easy to get the tone just right. If you sing with your own voice and you know that you sound good, it really isn’t such a big deal.
Have you ever performed on a stage?
I did some shows in Australia (with Tony Blackburn) but I have been playing in many bands. I got into ukulele because I liked the music. I loved the tunes but I didn’t like the ukulele band. When I was playing in a band with them, I would just sit down and start talking. They would go ahead and play and I could just sing all I wanted, but I wouldn’t have anything to talk about! And the other two guys would have fun with me! So the other day some guy got on stage and said, “I’ll play for you! I play in a band called The Electric Tango Biz.” I didn’t know what he was talking about. But he just seemed such a nice person. So I took him for a ride. And he said, “I like you. Why don’t we just play?” So then we started playing. I didn’t have any guitar. The other guy had a big ukulele and we just sat and talked. It was great, and then we started playing.
