One of the best sounds is a high, low, fast or steady note. You get better sounding notes by moving a bit to the left or right. Also try to play your lines with your head held high, rather than letting go.
Is there something you want to show me?
It’s not too difficult, but the easiest and most effective part of improvising is your own imagination. You can also play some very short melodies that show you the general direction of what you want to express.
What are two songs that you are planning to add to your collection?
I’m a big fan of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I’m also a heavy fan of Bob Marley. I think most of us can easily play some of their songs, but have difficulty understanding their meanings. I also like the original versions of The Beach Boys, especially “Sweet Little Sixteen” by Peter Gabriel.
How do you do you practise?
My technique is based on playing on the instrument, while practising a piano piece for an hour. I practice at home, on a guitar and piano. If it’s too loud and I have no time I have my phone or headphones to drown the noise.
What is my greatest weakness?
My greatest weakness is the fact that I have trouble understanding basic chords. This is the reason I don’t practise on my ukelele.
Is there anything you’d like to tell a new improvisor?
To become an improvisor involves a lot of hard work. You need to be very hard working in order to keep making good practice. Improvised music takes a lot of discipline. To improve, you need a lot of practise. You also need to have fun. I’m sure you will come back stronger than ever after some of your time in the studio.
