The New York State Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in close partnership with the City of New York and The City of New York Parks Department and the City University of New York (CUNY), is launching a partnership with our Regional Center in Harlem from July 2013 through December 2020 to develop a comprehensive approach to curbing street crime on the South and West sides of the Bronx.
This plan calls for:
* Increasing the number of patrols in the South Bronx neighborhood to include additional officers with a “street presence.” The idea is to increase the awareness of the community about police presence in public, especially in high-crime areas, to create an environment of increased safety.
* Facilitating increased pedestrian safety by installing lighting and pedestrian safety markings in areas where pedestrian collisions can occur.
* Building “safety gardens” into the landscape through the installation of crosswalks and traffic calming measures, particularly in areas with existing dangerous intersections, and ensuring that these areas have adequate street lighting to enhance safety, and to further encourage safe pedestrian transportation.
* Installing new traffic calming measures in areas with the highest reported rate of collisions with pedestrians.
* Improving the safety of children by placing signs on school grounds, and other places where children are likely to play, to warn of traffic hazards or dangerous traffic behavior.
While the goal is to make a positive impact, a lack of resources, and limited resources, can have their impact on community engagement. This partnership is an important component in the effort to improve public safety on the South Bronx. Although the MTA has the resources to make certain that the project will succeed in getting New York State to partner with the City, we are still a much smaller organization than
