The only thing you need to know for beginners is the steps you will take for your own learning the “hand.”
You will first take the stage of the ventriloquist and then you will use an apparatus called an “Aldo-Romanian mask,” which is a wooden mask with a thin mask plate. This will be a step where you begin the first step of ventriloquism and that is to “feel” the sound.
When the mask is on you will feel the sound that you want to hear and that sound, depending on what your particular instrument is, it can either be a tone or a hum.
So, the first step of ventriloquism is to develop your ability to “feel” the quality of the sound. This is the only thing you will need to practice with.
This way if you practice a particular set of notes and you hear a particular note that you’ve never heard before you will have an idea for how it sounds and not the sound it will eventually develop into.
Next, you will go over a series of sets of intervals that you would have learned on stage and in front of the audience during the “stage” that you are going to use the mask to “feel.” You will then use a “master” for that set to see which one will develop the most.
After mastering the notes, you will use these to develop additional sets of intervals for you to play for yourself and to play on stage when you will first play using the “master.” After you have played several sets where you have “felt” a new quality or sound, you may choose to add it to a new set of intervals.
When you have mastered all four steps of a set, and after mastering a set many times, there are simply more steps to be taken for your own learning to be accomplished. You must be patient with your learning because it isn’t very efficient or quick unless you apply yourself very diligently to it.
The other thing you have to learn is that the way these procedures work will be the same for all instruments as far as the “feel.” Each of us is more comfortable to handle instruments that don’t have the same kind of sound as the other instruments.
In doing so there will be a definite difference in our feeling or “sound” when we get to use our mask on a “mastering” piece or on “play” pieces for other people.
