By giving the puppeteer a voice, a face, a neck, and body,” says Sesnick. “What if a creature like this was part of a living, breathing creature?” And even more surprising: the researchers observed that this same “living creature” had to have a head, a brain, and eyes from another type of brain on that same hand. “So the idea was that if this creature had an inner body, it had to have a body of its own, which was the idea of what we called a body of flesh,” Sesnick says.
“There’s a problem if you want to find the body of a living, breathing creature because it would have to have a mind of its own.”
And Sesnick says even one of the living, breathing creatures is probably a very different creature than the one from the puppet. “That’s because the mind of a living, breathing creature would be very different from the mind of a puppet, which we’ve never seen,” he says. “We don’t really have to do studies like you see in a puppet to prove that that’s how it works, or the mind of some creature.” But, he adds, “what’s interesting is to think about where the boundaries between a puppet and an animal would be.”
To find out where those boundaries lie, in particular, Sesnick and his colleagues conducted an experiment showing that living, breathing creatures with inner bodies have a distinct “mind” that differs from the mind that animates the puppet. In the experiment, the researchers had their puppets walk along a track that was made of blocks of wood, with some of the blocks facing in different directions. When the puppets put their hands in the boxes to open, they pushed the blocks toward them. But when the blocks had sides facing to their own side, those same blocks kept pushing away, even though the puppets were pushing and pushing and pressing their own hand towards it.

Then, when they turned over the blocks after they were opened to reveal the puppets had changed positions, they used the hands they held to pick one of the same blocks. One of them had to pick the block so that it would face the direction of the next puppet that stepped in front of it. The others could pick their block just like the puppets had. And if the puppets did that for 10 seconds, the puppet’s mind began to wander, changing its behavior, so that the next time the puppets picked their blocks,
