Like a talking machine or something?” he said. “Or do we just sing the line, and the puppet says it? That’s my first question.”
What he learned from Mr. Gumbel — and his own experience of making his own animated films — is that it is often more complicated than the simple lines a puppet writer can deliver.
“He was my greatest teacher, because everything he taught me I learned from him,” Mr. Nunn said. “If you are in a creative space without a lot of help, there can be a lot of fear.”
Mr. Nunn said that the puppet technique has become less effective as computer animation has advanced. He attributes that to the rise of motion sickness and that the more sophisticated an animator’s tools are, the deeper his characters must go to convey a character’s emotions.
“The problem is that a computer does what a puppet can do,” Mr. Nunn explained. “But it’s not as visceral, and the emotion isn’t as much a part of the performance — there’s just the word, the image, and the sound and the performance. I think it’s a lot more interesting than when it’s just puppet and puppet.”
Mr. Nunn said that animation is in a “very weird period right now” — he said he is looking into a second animated feature film.
“If you want to do animated films you need to have a certain vocabulary of language,” Mr. Nunn said. “You’ve got to know your characters. You’ve got to know what’s emotional, what isn’t.”
The more characters Mr. Nunn’s animators create, the more they must also take into account the fact that most of his characters are, in most cases, not quite who they appear to be. So while Mr. Nunn has a number of male characters like Binkie and Mabel that most audiences would find familiar, “I’m always trying to be creative in how I do it,” he explained.
“I get a lot of comments from my customers,” he said. “When they have a question they can’t understand, usually the answer is, ‘Oh, Mabel — this is the Mabel of the cartoon, and you have to have that.'”
