When it’s not “puppet” you think “puppet-like creature,” right? Right. And when it is “puppet,” you have to pay attention. As my colleague Dan Cudahy once said, “puppets are the only thing going on in your head.” Or as the former president of The Atlantic once put it, “The people with no brains are the puppets: the ones who don’t listen or act like a real person.”
If you can’t speak, don’t worry. Try to understand what’s coming out of your mouth and try to find ways to let it out. It’s not like if you have a bad cold or you’re getting old, then you can’t communicate, right? Right?
Here’s an example of when a real speaker is more productive than an actor.
I recently had a very interesting conversation in which I asked a client to review some of the recent changes to the way we are doing video content analysis. The client, having worked with me for years now, had been very involved and had a lot of questions about how we analyze video, but he kept leaving the question hanging. I pointed out that he was not actually asking a question about any analysis – he was, instead, looking for an explanation as to the specific nature and value of a particular video.
And he got the answer.
Asking about analysis vs. analyzing: A new paradigm for marketing video
After the initial excitement and amazement, a critical analysis took place, and not just one.

My team was up and running as usual, but we weren’t getting much in the way of requests. And for those requests he couldn’t give us a good answer, I could tell. So I told him that when new technology is introduced, we need to understand it so we can implement it. If we don’t understand the new concept, it won’t work and it will kill the company. And if he thought this was a reasonable thought, that we should invest in figuring out exactly what’s going on, he was probably right.
At that point I noticed his voice change. It began to sound something like this:
We don’t know what we’re doing with this.
That’s it. I had his answer and I was back to the interview. And if the only thing he can really think about is, “Is it even valuable,” I get the impression he really, really doesn’t.
