When news broke in October that a Florida mother of two, who had been locked up in a Florida jail for nearly two years on a drug conviction and was on hunger strike, was set to be freed, many wondered how she had managed to survive three years.
But the reason she was in jail in the first place, an unknown quantity until a recent interview with a local reporter, wasn’t that she had been charged with being in possession of a synthetic cannabinoid.
Rather, the “battery” that the woman received from the sheriff’s office — a drug called K2 — was a product she had bought from Silk Road, a dark online marketplace where people could buy and sell such products as synthetic marijuana, MDMA, acid, ecstasy and more. She had purchased dozens of kilos of K2, she said, in one go, in November 2015, for about $30,000.

The reason they were doing her a favor, the woman said, was that she had taken on their customer service contract and the company had promised to let her leave the jail with the help of a friend.

“They said they would take care of her,” she said, speaking with the Rev. Al Sharpton. “And then they sent the cops to take her home.”
A new report from the Department of Justice says what prosecutors said was clear: the reason she ended up locked up in the first place was because she had violated the terms of her contract with the drug manufacturer and sold large quantities of K2, which had already been in her possession, leading to her own arrest and charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
