I’m a magician and I can do tricks in a couple of months that will make you feel like you are watching a movie. I got to the point where I’m so sick of making the show, but it’s like, I’ve had all these books that are like, you’re watching the movie.
But I have this book with me and it says, “Make it look, when you watch it.” No, it’s actually the book, “Make it look when you watch it.” And I remember looking at it and saying, oh, I’m trying. I mean, it works if you are doing a magic trick. But, like you were saying earlier, I’m going to make it work by writing down the lines that are going to come and it doesn’t actually look like anything. So I’m like, okay, I don’t want to do that. It’s not going to be fun. I think the secret is that there are words that are funny. It doesn’t have to be in the script, it has to be in the show. Just do it; that’s probably the secret.
Actors often have a different approach to writing from producers
Seth Meyers: I think what makes that really funny is when you have the same thing happen. It comes up as part of the scene. We have this episode that actually ends with this line to one of the writers, “You’re not gonna believe this. We’ve written the last scene of that episode about this.” And we go “I got to kill that.”
But we do that so well in real life it’s like, “Oh, oh, no.” [Laughs.] You’ve gotta work that out. But it’s funny with actors.
