The first time I saw “The Secret History of the United States of America” (originally published in 1974), I was 14, and I remember thinking it was really good. I remember thinking it was a lot of fun because I was having fun. I’ve also seen it in several different editions since that first time. However, on June 3, 2011, the publisher informed me that the US Constitution had been entirely rewritten on the day before it was issued for the US’s first birthday! Why would anyone rewrite the Constitution?
If you read this article, you’ll notice that there are still a few important pieces missing – a few other things – before “The Secret History” was published. I have updated some of those that have been added. However, some will need more work, so the book is not necessarily finished. (The book was designed to be “ready-made” for reference and reference is always good.) And while you’ll still be able to follow the narrative, it will never be as complete as it could be, nor the content of the book be quite as satisfying.
But what does a 14-year old boy think of such a thing? I’m sure he thought it was pretty cool.
I was wondering if I could find the original book pages where people “read and wrote the new US Constitution on their own” and the author’s words. I did, and they look pretty cool. They are actually the ones I copied and pasted from page to page from the book. I did do a few edits because a certain line (“Every man in the world who reads the Constitution” ) was too long, and a couple more had to do with the word “under God”, and there were a few spelling errors, but I also did a lot of checking because I wanted to be 100% sure the word “under God” could be spelled the normal way that the original had been written with a capital letter.
It’s been great discovering this book, and I hope I’ve contributed something to our heritage that might give people something to ponder as they are getting older.
